A Mara honeymoon is usually combined with a beach extension — Zanzibar, Diani, or Watamu — and the contrast between the bush and the coast is one of the most satisfying travel rhythms available in Africa.

What to Look for in a Honeymoon Camp

Private tent placement: The best camps position honeymoon tents away from the main camp cluster, with maximum privacy and unobstructed views. Ask specifically about tent separation.

Outdoor bathing: An outdoor shower or soaking tub under the sky is a near-universal feature of the leading romantic camps. The experience of bathing in the open air at the edge of the bush, particularly at dusk, is something that no hotel bathroom replicates.

Private dining options: A private dinner in the bush — lanterns, a folding table, a fire, wildlife sounds in the background — is offered by most good camps as a one-off romantic occasion. The Beach-and-Bush Combination

Zanzibar is the most popular extension, combining the Mara with the Stone Town and the southeast or north coast beaches. It requires an additional flight (typically via Nairobi to Zanzibar), which adds a transit day, but the combination of Swahili island culture, turquoise water, and the contrast with the bush is exceptional.

Diani Beach in southern Kenya is more straightforward logistically — a quick flight from Wilson Airport avoids a Nairobi transit. Diani's beach hotels and boutique properties are well suited to a honeymoon extension. The coral reef and water activities add a different dimension to the journey.

Watamu on Kenya's north coast is quieter than Diani, with some of Kenya's best diving and snorkelling on the Watamu Marine National Park reef.
