Choosing Between Uganda & Rwanda
Uganda and Rwanda offer genuinely different trekking experiences. The permit price gap USD 800 versus USD 1,500 is significant and often the deciding factor for clients not committed to luxury accommodation. But price alone is a narrow lens.
Uganda gives access to more habituated families, more sector choice, more varied terrain, and the unique gorilla habituation experience. Rwanda gives easier access, a more streamlined journey, and a concentration of top-tier lodges close to the park. It also suits travelers with a shorter window; a Rwanda gorilla trek can realistically be done as a two-day add-on from Kigali.

THE PRIMARY DESTINATION
Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Bwindi is the primary gorilla trekking destination in Uganda. The forest itself is dense, ancient, and genuinely challenging to move through which is part of what makes it so distinct. This is not a manicured wildlife reserve. It is a mountain rainforest at altitude, with steep terrain, unpredictable weather, and the kind of quiet that makes a gorilla encounter feel earned.
Bwindi is divided into four sectors, each with its own character and set of habituated gorilla families. Choosing the right sector matters.
BWINDI TREKKING SECTORS
Buhoma
The oldest and most established trekking sector. Located in the north of the park, it is the most accessible from the main roads and has the widest range of accommodation nearby. The terrain here is varied some treks are moderate, others more demanding. Buhoma tends to be the default choice for first-time visitors.

PREMIUM LOGISTICS
Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
The most accessible gorilla trekking destination on the continent, located just two to three hours from Kigali.
The park covers a section of the Virunga Massif, and gorilla trekking here follows routes through bamboo forest and up the slopes of extinct volcanoes.
Rwanda has deliberately positioned gorilla trekking as a premium, low-volume experience. The permit costs USD 1,500 per person, and that pricing model reflects a conservation strategy as much as a commercial one. Visitor numbers are controlled, the lodges near the park are predominantly high-end, and the logistics from Kigali are seamless.
Rwanda trekking permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Groups are capped at eight people per family per day, and minimum age is 15 years. Permits should be booked well in advance.

THE VOLCANIC COMPACT EXPERIENCE
Uganda: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga is Uganda's smaller gorilla park, located in the corner of the Virunga Massif where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC meet. It protects one habituated gorilla family. The park is compact and the terrain involves volcanic forest quite different in character from Bwindi.
Mgahinga is best approached as part of a broader southwestern Uganda journey that also includes gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, and volcanic hiking. Permit prices are the same as Bwindi at USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents.
AN IN-DEPTH ENCOUNTER
Gorilla Habituation Experience
Spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family in the deep forest.
Where a standard gorilla trek gives you one hour with a habituated family, the gorilla habituation experience gives you up to four hours with a semi-habituated group one that is still in the process of being acclimatised to human presence. You trek alongside researchers, trackers, and rangers who work with these gorillas daily.
The experience is available only in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi, specifically with the Bushaho and Bukingyi families. Only four permits are issued per family per day, making this one of the most limited wildlife experiences in Africa.
The permit costs USD 1,500 per person for foreign non-residents the same price as a standard Rwanda gorilla permit, but with a significantly longer and less structured encounter. Advance booking of six months or more is advisable.

Trekking from Kigali into Uganda
For travelers who want to trek in Uganda but are routing through Rwanda, starting in Kigali and driving to southwestern Uganda is a practical option. Kigali to the Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi takes roughly four to five hours depending on border conditions. This approach works well for back-to-back gorilla trekking across both countries or for combining gorilla trekking in Uganda with time in Rwanda on either side of the journey.
IMPORTANT DETAILS
Planning Notes
Gorilla trekking permits should be booked as far in advance as possible, ideally three to six months ahead particularly for peak season (July to September and December to March).
Physical requirements: the ability to walk for two to six hours on uneven, steep terrain at altitude. Fitness levels vary significantly between sectors and on any given day depending on where the gorillas have moved.
Rain gear, long trousers, and ankle-supporting boots are recommended regardless of season. The forest is wet and the vegetation is dense.
Porter hire is available at Bwindi for an additional fee and is worth considering for clients with any fitness concerns.
No cameras with flash are permitted during the one-hour visit. A seven-metre distance from the gorillas must be maintained at all times.
