The encounter is similar in duration, but the Journey around it is not. Uganda offers more sector choice and the habituation experience. Rwanda gives the simplest access from Kigali. The right decision depends on time, terrain, permit cost, and what should follow the trek.
Neither country offers a guaranteed short trek or an easier gorilla encounter. The gorillas move, weather changes, and terrain varies by family allocation. Choose the country for the route it makes possible, then prepare for a full forest day.
Uganda
Bwindi has four trekking sectors, while Mgahinga adds a Virunga option. Uganda also offers the gorilla habituation experience. It suits a longer Journey that may include Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, or Rwanda, but the road and flight plan needs more care.
Uganda gorilla permits for travel through 31 December 2026: USD 800 standard for foreign non-residents, with a USD 600 low-season rate in April, May, and November.
Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park fits a shorter Journey because the park and its lodges are reached by road from Kigali. It also combines cleanly with Nyungwe or Akagera. The main trade-off is permit cost, not the quality of the encounter.
International visitor permit: USD 1,500 per person.
Park, sector, permit date, and accommodation are one decision. A lodge that looks close on a map may serve a different briefing point, adding avoidable driving before an early start.
Uganda
Choose Bwindi for four distinct trekking sectors, a wider range of route combinations, and access to the gorilla habituation experience. The compromise is logistics: the correct airstrip, road approach, sector, and lodge must work together.

Choose Volcanoes when time is limited or when the Journey should remain within Rwanda. The park is reached by road from Kigali and has a strong concentration of high-comfort lodges. The international visitor permit is considerably more expensive than Uganda’s.

Choose Mgahinga for a smaller Virunga setting that can combine gorilla trekking with golden monkeys or a volcanic hike. Permit availability is more limited than in Bwindi, so the park works best when the route is built around a confirmed date.

Buhoma is Bwindi’s most established trekking base and has the broadest range of nearby accommodation. Road access is usually simpler than for the southern sectors. Trek difficulty still depends on the gorilla family’s position on the day, so choosing Buhoma does not guarantee an easy walk.
Ruhija sits high on Bwindi’s eastern side. It works well when the Journey approaches from Kabale or continues through the eastern side of the forest. The altitude and steep forest paths can make the trek demanding, while the quieter setting and strong birdlife suit travellers who want more time in the forest.
Rushaga has a larger selection of trekking permits and is the base for the gorilla habituation experience. Its southern position also suits routes arriving through Kisoro or crossing from Rwanda. The right lodge must be matched to the briefing point because transfer times around southern Bwindi are easy to underestimate.
Nkuringo is remote and physically demanding. Treks often involve a steep descent followed by a sustained climb back to the ridge. It suits active travellers who value a quieter base and are comfortable making the terrain part of the experience.
A standard trek allows one hour with a fully habituated family. The habituation experience allows up to four hours with a group still becoming accustomed to carefully managed human presence. Researchers, trackers, and rangers remain central to the day.
The experience is based in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector and has fewer permits than standard trekking. It suits travellers who want more observation time and are ready for a longer, less predictable day in the forest.
The foreign non-resident permit is USD 1,500 through 31 December 2026 and USD 1,800 from 1 January 2027. The permit date should be fixed before the wider Journey is confirmed.
Trek length cannot be promised because trackers follow the gorillas’ current position. A well-planned Journey protects the day around that uncertainty instead of compressing it between transfers.
Expect steep, uneven ground at altitude. Some walks are short; others take several hours. Tell us about mobility or fitness concerns before permits are assigned.
Wear broken-in boots, long trousers, long sleeves, and carry waterproof layers. Forest rain and muddy ground are possible in any month.
Hiring a porter supports the local porter network and makes the day easier, even for fit travellers. We can arrange this at the briefing point.
Uganda permits are secured on full payment and unpaid seven-day holds are no longer offered. Rwanda permits are also date-specific. The confirmed date anchors the route.
Visitors who are unwell may be refused the trek to protect the gorillas. Health and entry requirements should be reviewed before travel with the relevant authorities and a qualified clinician.
