16-Day Tanzania Full Northern Circuit & Zanzibar
Journey Overview
For travelers visiting Tanzania once who want the most complete version of the journey, this is it. Sixteen days covers what shorter itineraries consistently leave out: Arusha National Park as a proper first full day, two nights at Lake Natron well off the main tourist routes, three consecutive nights in the central Serengeti, and both Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara before the transition to Zanzibar. Lake Natron is the section that separates this from simply a longer version of the standard circuit. Most northern circuit itineraries bypass it because it adds driving time and sits outside the main route. The volcanic terrain around Ol Doinyo Lengai looks nothing like the Serengeti or the crater, the flamingo breeding colony operates on a different scale from anything else on the circuit, and the relative absence of other visitors changes the character of the experience considerably. Three nights at Nungwi close the journey with enough time for the coast to feel like its own thing rather than a finish line. This suits first-time Tanzania travelers who want the most thorough possible introduction, and experienced travelers who have done the circuit before and want to fill in what they missed.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a private transfer brings you to your lodge beneath Mount Meru. A safari briefing covers the itinerary ahead. The evening is at leisure.
Day 2: Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park is reached in under an hour from the lodge. At around 542km², it is one of Tanzania's smaller parks, but its diversity is considerable: montane forest, the Momella Lakes, and the flanks of Mount Meru within a compact area. The park holds black-and-white colobus monkeys, giraffe, buffalo, hippo, and abundant waterfowl. A walking safari with an armed ranger and a guided game drive are both included on this day.
Day 3: Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, the drive south takes around two and a half hours to Tarangire National Park. The afternoon is spent on a game drive through the park's riverine woodland, baobab savannah, and open grassland. The Tarangire River concentrates wildlife during the dry season and the park is consistently productive for elephant throughout the year.
Day 4: Mto wa Mbu, Cultural Engagement
Today covers the village of Mto wa Mbu, located near the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The settlement is unusually diverse: more than one hundred tribes are represented here. A guided walk introduces local farming practice, banana cultivation, traditional homesteads, and artisan workshops. This day offers a different kind of engagement from the park-based itinerary days.
Day 5: Lake Natron
The drive north to Lake Natron takes around three to four hours from the Manyara area, passing through increasingly remote volcanic terrain. The lake sits at the base of the active stratovolcano Ol Doinyo Lengai. Its mineral-rich, highly alkaline waters support one of the largest flamingo breeding colonies in Africa: lesser flamingos arrive in significant numbers during some seasons. The surrounding landscape is volcanic and largely undeveloped, with escarpment waterfalls and open plains extending toward the Kenyan border.
Day 6: Lake Natron, Further Exploration
A second day at Lake Natron allows for guided walks to nearby waterfalls, optional visits to Maasai communities in the surrounding area, and time in a landscape that sees far fewer visitors than the main circuit parks. The presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai on the horizon (still an active volcano) gives this section of the journey a distinctive character.
Day 7: Central Serengeti National Park
The drive from Lake Natron to the Serengeti takes most of the day, entering the park from the northeast. An afternoon game drive runs on arrival in the central Seronera region. The central Serengeti holds year-round concentrations of predators and plains game independent of migration timing.
Day 8: Central Serengeti National Park
A full day in the Serengeti. Early morning drives are generally more productive: predators are active during the cooler hours. A picnic lunch in the field keeps the drive continuous without a return to camp at midday.
Day 9: Central Serengeti National Park
A third day in the central Serengeti provides time to explore different sectors of the Seronera region. Leopard is well-established in the riverine woodland, lion prides are documented on the open plains and among the kopjes, and cheetah occupy the shorter-grass areas. Your guide adjusts routing based on recent sightings and conditions.
Day 10: Ngorongoro Highlands
After a morning game drive in the Serengeti, the drive south enters the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and climbs into the highland landscape. The transition from flat savannah to rolling green hills is noticeable within the first hour. The overnight stay is on the crater rim, with views across the caldera from the camp.
Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater begins. The floor covers around 260km² and holds one of Africa's highest concentrations of large mammals in a fixed area: lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, flamingo along the soda lake edge, and a small black rhino population. The game drive runs until early afternoon before the ascent. Transfer to the lodge follows.
Day 12: Lake Manyara National Park
After breakfast, the drive to Lake Manyara National Park takes under an hour. A game drive covers the groundwater forest, lakeshore, and acacia woodland sections. Elephant are frequently encountered in the forest, baboon are common along the roads, and hippo rest in the lake. The afternoon drive returns to Arusha for dinner and the overnight stay.
Day 13: Domestic Flight to Zanzibar, Nungwi
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the domestic flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, a private transfer heads north along the island's western coast to Nungwi. The beach at Nungwi is wide and tidal variation is minimal compared to the island's east coast, making it consistently swimmable. The afternoon is at leisure.
Day 14: Zanzibar, Beach Leisure
A full day at leisure on the Nungwi coast. Optional activities including snorkelling, sunset dhow cruises, deep-sea fishing, and diving on the nearby reef can be arranged through the resort.
Day 15: Zanzibar, Beach Leisure
A second full day at leisure. The Indian Ocean faces north from this section of the coast and the beach retains good light through most of the day.
Day 16: Departure from Zanzibar
After breakfast, a private transfer brings you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport for your onward international flight.
