12-Day Tanzania Northern Circuit & Zanzibar Journey
Journey Overview
Twelve days allows the full northern circuit to be covered properly and still leaves meaningful time on the coast. Most safari-and-beach combinations compress the Zanzibar section into two or three nights, which rarely feels adequate. Five nights here divides between a night in Stone Town and four at Nungwi beach, giving Zanzibar enough room to function as its own experience rather than a staged finish before the flight home. The safari section moves through Tarangire, Lake Manyara, two nights in the central Serengeti, and Ngorongoro in a sequence that avoids the long return transfers that tighter itineraries require. This suits travelers who want complete coverage of the northern circuit alongside a proper coastal extension, and who are visiting Tanzania for the first time and want the full picture rather than selecting between parks.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, a private transfer brings you to your accommodation in Arusha. Dinner and overnight at the lodge, with the safari beginning the following morning.
Day 2: Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, the drive south takes around two and a half hours to Tarangire National Park. The river that bears the park's name is the only reliable water source in the area during the dry months. Elephant families concentrate along the riverbanks at this time, and the park holds more breeding bird species than anywhere else on the northern circuit. A full game drive runs through the afternoon, with lunch in the field.
Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park
After breakfast, the drive to Lake Manyara National Park takes under an hour. Despite its modest size (around 330km²), the park's habitat variety is considerable: groundwater forest, alkaline lakeshore, floodplain, and acacia woodland. The name Manyara comes from the Maasai word emanyara, a thorny plant traditionally used to fence family homesteads. A full game drive runs through the afternoon, with lunch in the field. Days 4-5: Central Serengeti National Park After breakfast on Day 4, the drive heads through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands and descends into the Serengeti's southern plains. The Serengeti is Tanzania's oldest national park and one of the oldest intact ecosystems on earth. The central region holds year-round concentrations of wildlife independent of the migration: significant lion, cheetah, and leopard populations are resident throughout. Game drives run through both afternoons. Day 5 is a full day in the park.
Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater
After an early breakfast, the drive south from the Serengeti reaches the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater was created when a large volcano collapsed inward two to three million years ago and now forms a self-contained ecosystem approximately 20km across and 600m deep. A game drive on the crater floor follows on arrival, with lunch in the field. The drive to the lodge follows in the afternoon.
Day 7: Transfer to Zanzibar via Arusha, Stone Town
After breakfast, the drive returns to Arusha for the domestic flight to Zanzibar. Stone Town, on the western coast of Unguja island, has been inhabited continuously as a trading settlement for more than a thousand years. Its architecture reflects layers of Arab, Indian, and Swahili influence and the old town carries UNESCO World Heritage status. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Days 8-11: Nungwi Beach, Zanzibar After breakfast on Day 8, a short transfer from Stone Town heads north to Nungwi on the island's northern tip. The beach is wide and one of the more sheltered stretches of Zanzibari coastline. Tidal variation is minimal compared to the east coast, making it consistently swimmable through the day. Optional activities including snorkelling, sunset dhow cruises, deep-sea fishing, and diving can be arranged in advance or through the resort. Four nights at leisure.
Day 12: Departure from Zanzibar
After breakfast, a private transfer brings you to Zanzibar International Airport for your onward flight.
