Arusha is the safari capital of northern Tanzania — the bustling town at the foot of Mount Meru where virtually every northern-circuit journey begins. A short drive from Kilimanjaro International Airport, it is the staging point for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara, as well as Kilimanjaro and Meru climbs. While most travellers move through quickly, Arusha rewards a night with its lively markets, the coffee estates on the green slopes around town, the cultural heritage centre, and easy access to Arusha National Park for a gentle first taste of wildlife.
