12-Day Tanzania Honeymoon Journey: Northern Circuit & Zanzibar

After breakfast, the drive south takes around two and a half hours to Tarangire National Park. The park's terrain (baobab savannah, riverine woodland, and seasonal swamps) is one of the most visually distinctive on the northern circuit. The Tarangire River draws large numbers of elephant and other species during the dry season. The afternoon is spent on a game drive before the transfer to Karatu for the overnight stay.

A short drive from Karatu reaches Lake Manyara National Park. The game drive covers the full extent of the park: from the groundwater forest at the entrance to the open lakeshore and acacia woodland further south. Tree-climbing lions are documented in the acacia belt and the park holds a substantial elephant population. Birdlife along the lake includes flamingo, pelican, stork, and hornbill. Lunch is served at a picnic site inside the park. Return to Karatu for the overnight stay.

After an early breakfast, the drive heads through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands and descends into the southern Serengeti. Game drives through the conservation area en route may encounter additional wildlife before the formal drive begins inside the park. Transfer to camp follows in the late afternoon.

A full day in the Serengeti. An early morning game drive covers the plains and woodland in the best light of the day. The afternoon takes a different route. The transition from the highlands to the Serengeti plains (and the drive back toward the conservation area through an alternative route) gives a clear sense of the ecosystem's scale and habitat variety.

After breakfast, the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater begins. The caldera floor sits around 600m below the rim and covers approximately 260km². The game drive moves across the grassland, past the swamp areas, and along the edge of Lake Magadi in the southwestern corner: a reliable area for flamingo and hippo. The drive ascends in early afternoon before the transfer to the Karatu lodge.

After breakfast, the drive heads to Arusha for the domestic flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, accommodation is in Stone Town: the UNESCO-listed historic centre on the western coast of Unguja island. The town's architecture reflects centuries of Swahili, Arab, and Indian influence, with narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, and coral stone buildings. The afternoon is at leisure to explore the waterfront and surroundings.
