12-Day Western Uganda
Private Journey Through the Parks of the West
Journey Overview
“An exceptionally well-planned western Uganda route. Traverse five distinct ecosystems from savannah lakes to ancient rainforests, featuring white rhinos, wild chimpanzees, and mountain gorillas.”
Uganda's western wildlife circuit is one of the most logically structured journeys in Africa. You move north to south through five distinct ecosystems, each one different enough from the last that the progression feels deliberate rather than accumulated. The Nile and its savannah give way to dense primate forest, then open Rift Valley plains, then the oldest and most biodiverse forest on the continent, then — deliberately — a quieter grassland park that lets the journey land properly before you leave.
Key Highlights

Itinerary
Arrival in Entebbe
Entebbe
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, perched on the scenic shores of Lake Victoria, our team will be there to welcome you. You’ll be transferred to your boutique guesthouse where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing in the tropical gardens or taking a gentle walk along the lakeshore. It’s a slow-paced start designed to help you recover from your long flight, with your guide offering a comprehensive briefing over dinner to prepare you for the road ahead.
North to Murchison Falls, via Ziwa
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
We set off early, driving north toward Murchison Falls National Park. En route, we make a crucial stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This is Uganda’s only wild rhino population, and tracking these massive, prehistoric creatures on foot alongside experienced rangers is a thrilling and humbling experience. After lunch, we continue our journey, entering Murchison Falls in the late afternoon. You'll catch your first glimpse of the Nile River cutting through the savanna before we check into our lodge for a well-earned rest.
Murchison Falls: Boat, Hike, and Game Drive
Murchison Falls National Park
The morning begins with a game drive across the northern bank’s rolling plains, scanning for Rothschild’s giraffes, elephants, Uganda kob, and the resident lion prides. In the afternoon, we take to the water for a boat safari up the Victoria Nile. The riverbanks are teeming with hippos, massive Nile crocodiles, and diverse birdlife. The boat drops you at the base of Murchison Falls, where you’ll hike to the top, feeling the ground shake as the entire Nile is forced through a narrow seven-meter gorge.
Drive South to Kibale Forest
Kibale National Park
Leaving the sweeping savannas of Murchison behind, we begin our scenic drive south along the Albertine Rift escarpment. It’s a full day of travel, but the changing landscapes—from dry plains to lush tea plantations and crater lakes—make it a fascinating journey. By late afternoon, we arrive at the edge of Kibale Forest, a dense, ancient rainforest that boasts the highest concentration of primates in East Africa. We’ll settle into our forest lodge to the sounds of the jungle waking up for the evening.
Chimpanzee Tracking and Bigodi Wetland
Kibale National Park
Today is dedicated to Kibale's most famous residents: the chimpanzees. Tracking these highly intelligent and vocal primates through the thick forest canopy is an intense and deeply rewarding experience. You'll spend an hour observing their complex social dynamics, grooming habits, and impressive agility. In the afternoon, we shift our focus to the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided community walk. Here, we'll spot various monkey species and exceptional birdlife, including the Great Blue Turaco, while supporting local conservation initiatives.
Drive to Queen Elizabeth, Afternoon Game Drive
Queen Elizabeth National Park
We leave Kibale and make the short, scenic drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. Arriving in time for lunch, we’ll spend the late afternoon exploring the park’s northern plains on a game drive. We'll be looking out for large herds of elephants, buffalo, and the park’s famous tree-climbing lions. The contrasting landscapes of crater lakes, euphorbia forests, and open savanna make this one of Uganda’s most visually striking parks.
Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
Queen Elizabeth National Park
We start with a dawn game drive on the Kasenyi plains, maximizing our chances of seeing predators on the move and observing the early morning activity of the park’s abundant wildlife. As the day warms up, we head to the Kazinga Channel for an afternoon boat safari. This natural waterway connects Lake Edward and Lake George and boasts one of the world's highest concentrations of hippos, alongside bathing elephants and an astonishing array of waterbirds. It’s relaxed, incredibly productive wildlife viewing.
Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Today we journey further south, driving through the park's remote Ishasha sector. If luck is on our side, we might spot Ishasha's famous lions lounging in the branches of massive fig trees—a behavior rarely seen elsewhere. Leaving the savanna behind, the road begins to climb into the cooler, mist-shrouded mountains of the Kigezi Highlands. We arrive at the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest by late afternoon, settling into our lodge and preparing for tomorrow’s profound encounter.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking, Rushaga
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
This is the pinnacle of the trip. After an early briefing, we enter the dense, tangled undergrowth of Bwindi to track a habituated family of mountain gorillas. The trek can be demanding, traversing steep and muddy terrain, but the moment you make eye contact with a silverback, the fatigue instantly vanishes. Spending a quiet, respectful hour observing these gentle giants interact, play, and feed in their natural habitat is arguably the most moving wildlife experience on earth.
Drive East to Lake Mburo
Lake Mburo National Park
Leaving the gorillas and the highland mists behind, we wind our way down toward the rolling, acacia-dotted landscapes of Lake Mburo National Park. It’s a smaller, more intimate park, and the only place in southern Uganda where you can reliably see zebra and impala. After a scenic drive and a relaxing lunch, we’ll head out for a late afternoon game drive, enjoying the park's serene atmosphere and perhaps spotting a leopard as the light begins to fade.
Walking Safari and Game Drive, Lake Mburo
Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo’s lack of elephants and lions makes it uniquely safe for walking safaris. Setting out on foot with an armed ranger this morning offers a completely different perspective on the bush. You’ll learn to read animal tracks, understand the micro-ecosystems, and approach grazing wildlife quietly. In the afternoon, we can opt for a final game drive or a peaceful boat trip on the lake itself, reflecting on the incredible diversity of landscapes and wildlife we’ve encountered over the past week.
Return to Entebbe & Departure
Entebbe
We enjoy one last leisurely breakfast in the bush before beginning the drive back to Entebbe. Along the way, we’ll stop at the Equator for a classic photo opportunity and a chance to stretch our legs. Depending on your flight schedule, we can arrange a day room in Entebbe for you to freshen up and repack. Finally, our team will transfer you to the airport in good time for your onward journey, bringing this comprehensive Ugandan expedition to a close.
