Journey Overview

Five days is enough time to experience Tanzania's northern circuit properly without the journey becoming a sequence of long transfers. The route opens in Tarangire, where elephant concentrations along the river and the baobab-heavy terrain provide a strong introduction to the region's landscape, before moving to the Serengeti's open plains and finishing inside the Ngorongoro Crater. The order matters: the parks build in familiarity and scale, so the crater at the end of the trip lands differently than it would at the start. This works particularly well as a first Tanzania safari. The pacing is measured, wildlife is reliable across all three stops, and the balance between driving time and time in the field is achievable without an early start every single day. Accommodation is at lodge level throughout.

Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Your guide collects you from Arusha and transfers south to Tarangire National Park (approximately two and a half hours on a sealed road). The park covers close to 3,000km² and takes its name from the river running through its centre. During the dry months from June to November, the river is the only reliable water source in the area and draws large elephant concentrations to its banks. The park holds more than 500 recorded bird species. The afternoon is spent on a game drive before continuing to Manyara for the night.

Day 2–3

Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, the route continues through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the Serengeti. The drive passes the crater rim, where a brief stop allows a view across the caldera (roughly 260km², enclosed by walls rising to around 600m). From there, the road descends into the Serengeti's southern grasslands. Covering 14,763km², the park's name derives from the Maasai word siringet, meaning "endless plains." An afternoon game drive follows arrival and runs until sunset. Day 3 continues with further game drives in the Serengeti.

Meals: Breakfast • Lunch • Dinner
Day 4

Serengeti to Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A half-day game drive in the central Serengeti precedes the southward drive toward the crater highlands. The Seronera area is consistently productive for lion, particularly during the dry season when prides concentrate near the river junction. The riverine woodland along the Seronera River is among the more reliable areas for leopard sightings in the park. The afternoon drive reaches the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the overnight stay.

Meals: Breakfast • Lunch • Dinner
Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

Arusha

After breakfast, the descent into the Ngorongoro Crater takes around 30 minutes on a winding track. The caldera sits approximately 600m below the surrounding rim and covers around 260km². Formed when a large volcano collapsed some two million years ago, it now supports more than 30,000 large mammals across grassland, swamp, and forest habitat, including a small population of black rhino. The game drive runs through the morning before the return journey to Arusha.
