The Dormant Volcanic Cones
Volcanoes National Park sits in the northwestern corner of Rwanda, where the Virunga Massif — a chain of eight volcanoes straddling Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo — forms a landscape of dormant cones, dense bamboo forest, and montane vegetation that changes character as altitude increases. Kigali is two and a half to three hours away by road, making this the most accessible gorilla trekking destination in Africa.
Rwanda has positioned Volcanoes as a premium experience from first principles: controlled visitor numbers, a high permit price that directly funds conservation, and a strong concentration of high-end camps and lodges within an hour of the park.
SPECIES OVERVIEW
Mountain Gorillas
Volcanoes National Park has twelve habituated gorilla families available for trekking. Group sizes vary from a few individuals to over thirty. Among the most noted families: Amahoro group (known for calm character), Sabyinyo group (usually closest to the park boundary — often the shortest trek), and Umubano group. Assignment is made by the Rwanda Development Board on the day and cannot be pre-selected.

SPECIES DIVERSITY
Golden Monkeys & Arid Wildlife
Volcanoes supports specialized montane endemics and rare primate populations.
The park is one of the world's only habitats for the golden monkey, a subspecies of blue monkey endemic to the Virunga Massif. A separate golden monkey trekking permit is available and gives access to large, habituated troops in the bamboo forest.
Forest elephant, buffalo, black-fronted duiker, and a range of smaller mammals inhabit the park at lower altitudes. Over 180 bird species are recorded, including 16 Albertine Rift endemics.
Gorilla Trekking
The trek begins at the Kinigi sector headquarters each morning with a briefing. Visitors are assigned to a gorilla group and guided by armed rangers and trackers into the forest.
Other Activities
Dian Fossey Tomb and Karisoke Research Visit
A guided hike to the Karisoke Research Centre site and Fossey's tomb. The hike takes three to four hours return and reaches approximately 3,000 metres. Provides conservation and historical context for the gorilla programme.
Volcano Hikes
Mount Bisoke (3,711m)
Six-hour return hike to a crater lake at the summit.
Mount Karisimbi (4,507m)
Two-day hike with overnight camping at altitude. Rwanda's highest volcano.
Mount Sabyinyo (3,634m)
Five-hour hike crossing the tri-border of Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC.
Golden Monkey Trekking
Separate permit available for golden monkey tracking in the bamboo zones of the lower park. Typically shorter and less demanding than gorilla trekking.

Best Time to Visit
June to September and December to February are peak season — drier trails, clearer visibility, and higher permit demand. March to May and October to November are wet seasons with lower visitor numbers. Gorilla trekking continues year-round.
Getting There
Two and a half to three hours by road from Kigali International Airport. Domestic charter flights to Musanze (Ruhengeri) airstrip take approximately 25 minutes from Kigali.
How Bwindi Fits Into a Wider Journey
Volcanoes is most commonly the centrepiece of a Rwanda-only journey or the Rwanda component of a combined Uganda–Rwanda itinerary. From Bwindi (Rushaga sector), the drive via the Kyanika border crossing takes four to five hours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Rwanda's gorilla permit cost more than Uganda's?
Rwanda's permit is set at USD 1,500 as part of a deliberate high-value, low-volume conservation strategy. The revenue funds park management, ranger salaries, anti-poaching operations, and community revenue sharing. Uganda's permit (USD 800) reflects a different model but the gorilla encounter itself is comparable.
Can I visit Volcanoes and Bwindi on the same trip?
Yes. The drive between Rushaga sector (Bwindi) and Kinigi (Volcanoes) takes four to five hours via the Kyanika border crossing. Zorani regularly plans two-country gorilla journeys combining both parks.
