The Acacia Woodlands & Lakes

Lake Mburo is Uganda's smallest national park and its most accessible from Kampala — about 3.5 hours by road. It occupies a landscape of rolling hills, open acacia woodland, and five interconnected lakes that provide reliable water year-round. It lacks elephants and covers a compact enough area that morning and afternoon can meaningfully cover different terrain.

The park's strongest argument is what it makes possible that no other Uganda park does: game viewing on horseback, mountain biking through the wildlife areas, and walking safaris alongside plains game without a vehicle.

EXCLUSIVE FAUNA PROFILE
“Lake Mburo is the only place in Uganda where Burchell's zebra and impala are found — both species are absent from the country's western and northern parks.”

SPECIES RICHNESS

Mammals & Predators

The park's mammal list includes Burchell's zebra, impala (the only population in Uganda), eland, topi, waterbuck, oribi, bohor reedbuck, warthog, buffalo, hippopotamus, Nile crocodile, and recently reintroduced Rothschild's giraffe. Leopard are present and viewed more reliably here than in many larger Uganda parks, particularly on night drives. Hyena, jackal, and genet are common after dark. Lion are present but rarely seen.

Horseback Safari

One of Uganda's two parks where horseback game viewing is available. Horse-guided drives allow closer approach to wildlife than vehicles in many cases. Operated by lodge-based concessions; suitable for moderate riders and above.

ACTIVE TRAILING03

Mountain Biking

Cycling through the park's game areas is permitted on designated routes, accompanied by an armed ranger. The compact size makes it genuinely viable and it changes the safari experience entirely.

Walking Safaris

Guided walking safaris are available and work well given the open acacia terrain. The absence of elephants and the reliable visibility make walks here lower-risk than in denser forest parks.

Boat and Canoe Trips

Guided boat trips on Lake Mburo are the best way to see hippo, crocodile, and the park's waterbirds. Canoe trips go further into papyrus channels and are a good option for shoebill.

SEASONALITY

Best Time to Visit

Lake Mburo is a viable year-round destination. The dry seasons (June to August, December to February) make the tracks more accessible and game viewing more concentrated.

TRANSIT

Getting There

Approximately 3.5 hours by road from Kampala/Entebbe. Lake Mburo is the natural overnight stop on journeys between Kampala and the western parks (Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi).

THE CIRCUIT

How It Fits Into a Wider Journey

Most itineraries use Lake Mburo as a one or two-night breakover between Kampala and the western circuit. The unique activities (horses, bikes, night drives, walking) give it genuine standalone value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lake Mburo worth more than one night?

Two nights is the better allocation, particularly if horseback or cycling are of interest. One night allows for one game drive and a boat trip. Two nights allows full use of the park's different activity options.

Are there elephants in Lake Mburo?

No. There are no elephants in Lake Mburo National Park. Clients who specifically want elephant viewing should plan for Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, or the Tanzanian parks.
