The wildebeest migration moves through both Kenya and Tanzania across the year. Here is where the herds are month by month, and how to decide which country suits your trip.
Both countries offer the Great Migration, and both are worth it. But they are not interchangeable: the migration is a year-round circuit through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, and where the herds are depends on the month you travel.
Is the migration in Kenya or Tanzania?
For most of the year, it is in Tanzania. The wildebeest spend roughly from December to July in the Serengeti — calving on the southern plains from January to March, then moving north and west. They cross into Kenya’s Maasai Mara only from around July, staying until the short rains pull them south again in late October or November. So Tanzania holds the herds for more of the year; Kenya holds the famous river crossings for a shorter, dramatic window.
When do the Mara River crossings happen?
The Mara River crossings — the scene most people picture — peak from July to mid-October, straddling the border between the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. If crossings are your priority, travel in this window and base yourself near the river. Nothing about them is guaranteed on any given day; patience and a good guide matter more than the exact camp.
Choose Kenya if…
You want the classic river-crossing spectacle in a compact window, easy flights from Nairobi, and the option of conservancies bordering the Maasai Mara where off-road and night drives are allowed. Kenya also combines naturally with a beach finish on the Indian Ocean.
Choose Tanzania if…
You want the herds for a longer season, the vast scale of the /parks/serengeti, and the calving drama of January to March. Tanzania pairs the migration with Ngorongoro Crater and, for many, a Zanzibar extension.
The honest answer
The right choice depends first on your travel dates, then on budget and what else is on the trip. If you can only travel in February, Tanzania is the answer. If you want crossings in September, Kenya’s Mara is hard to beat — though the northern Serengeti offers them too, with fewer vehicles.
