Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives, sharing around 98% of human DNA. Watching a habituated group move through a forest, the vocalisations, the social dynamics, the sheer physical speed of them in the canopy is a very different encounter from gorilla trekking. Less reverent, more raw.

DNA & SOCIAL DYNAMICS
Primate Journeys in East Africa
Uganda has the strongest chimpanzee trekking in the region. Kibale National Park is the best single destination on the continent for chimpanzee encounters. But there are other locations worth understanding, and combining them into a primate-focused Uganda journey is one of the more compelling itinerary structures Zorani plans.

THE BENCHMARK SAFARI
Kibale National Park, Uganda
Kibale is the benchmark for chimpanzee trekking. The park contains one of the highest densities of primates in Africa, with around 1,500 chimpanzees and thirteen other primate species including red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey, and L'Hoest's monkeys.
The forest is mid-altitude mostly between 1,100 and 1,600 metres and less physically demanding than gorilla trekking. Treks usually last two to four hours depending on where the chimpanzees are ranging. Once located, you have one hour with the group.
Kibale is best combined with Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south, which allows for a logical Uganda wildlife circuit.

ESSENTIAL PLANNING
Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking & Habituation Permits
Permit Pricing
USD 250 (Standard Trek) / USD 300 (Full-Day Habituation)
Standard Trek permit includes 1 hour in the presence of the chimpanzees once located.
Habituation Experience permit allows up to 8 hours in the field alongside trackers and researchers.
Permit prices apply directly to foreign non-residents (effective July 2024).
The strict minimum age for chimpanzee trekking and habituation is 15 years.
CANOPY SUSPENSION & COLOBUS TROOPS
Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda
One of the largest montane rainforests in Africa, offering accessible chimpanzee tracking and scenic suspension walks.
Nyungwe is one of the largest montane rainforests in Africa and provides the most accessible chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda. The forest also offers a canopy walkway, a 90-metre suspension bridge above the forest floor and large groups of Angolan colobus monkeys that move through the trees in groups of several hundred.
The chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe is less predictable than Kibale success rates are lower but the forest itself is exceptional, and the combination with the canopy walk and colobus troops makes it a worthwhile inclusion in any Rwanda journey, particularly for travelers spending multiple days in the south of the country.

MURCHISON FALLS EDGE
Budongo Forest, Uganda
Budongo is the chimpanzee trekking option within Murchison Falls National Park in the northwest of Uganda. The forest sits on the edge of the escarpment above the Albertine Rift, and the chimpanzees here have been studied for decades Budongo was one of the original sites for chimpanzee research in Africa.
Trekking at Budongo is less commercial than Kibale, and the forest has a quieter, less visited character. It suits travelers who are already routing through Murchison Falls for wildlife viewing and want to add a primate element without building a separate leg of the journey around it.

THE RIFT VALLEY CANYON
Kyambura Gorge, Uganda
A dramatic 16-kilometre forested gorge cutting through the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Kyambura Gorge is a 16-kilometre rift canyon that cuts through Queen Elizabeth National Park. A habituated chimpanzee community lives in the forest at the base of the gorge, an unusual setting that gives the trek a very different atmosphere from Kibale or Budongo.
It is worth noting that sighting success rates in Kyambura are lower than in Kibale; the community is smaller and the gorge terrain means the animals can be harder to locate. Kyambura makes most sense as a day activity within a Queen Elizabeth National Park visit rather than as a primary chimpanzee trekking destination.
ESSENTIAL PLANNING
Kyambura Gorge Chimpanzee Permit Guidelines
Permit Pricing
USD 100 per person (Foreign Non-Residents)
Best approached as a day activity within a broader Queen Elizabeth National Park wildlife package.
Chimpanzee group sizes are small and tracking success rate is lower due to the unique gorge geography.
Trek involves hiking into the deep valley canyon, requiring a decent level of fitness.
Minimum age of 15 years is strictly enforced.
PRIMATE GEOGRAPHY
The Uganda Primate Circuit
A dedicated primate journey through Uganda can reasonably cover chimpanzees in Kibale, gorillas in Bwindi, and other primates including red-tailed and vervet monkeys, olive baboons, and black-and-white colobus along the route between parks. This is not a marketing construction. The geography works, the distances are manageable, and the result is a coherent wildlife-led journey with significant variety.
A standard primate circuit runs from Entebbe south and west through Kibale, then down to Queen Elizabeth for optional chimp trekking in Kyambura Gorge before continuing to Bwindi. Transfers can be made by road or by domestic charter flight, depending on time and budget.

Planning Notes
The minimum age for chimpanzee trekking is 15 years for standard treks. The same applies to habituation experiences.
Trekking seasons: chimpanzee trekking is possible year-round. Kibale is forest and has no meaningful dry season rain gear is advisable regardless of when you travel.
Peak season permits at Kibale (June to September, December to March) should be booked at least two to three months in advance.
The standard chimpanzee trek includes one hour with the group once located. The habituation experience runs from approximately 06:00 to 14:00.
