The Victoria Nile & Savannahs
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest protected area, stretching from the Victoria Nile delta in the west to the savannah grasslands of the north. The centrepiece is the falls themselves — the point where the entire volume of the Victoria Nile is forced through a seven-metre gap in the rock before dropping 43 metres into the Nile below. The power and sound of it is impossible to convey from photographs.
The park is genuinely underrated on the international circuit. It has strong game viewing, a compelling boat experience, good primate options, and a wild, less-visited quality that is increasingly hard to find in East Africa.
“Murchison Falls supports one of the world's largest populations of Rothschild's giraffe — a subspecies listed as Endangered by the IUCN.”
SPECIES OVERVIEW
Savannah & River Wildlife
Murchison Falls supports one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa along the Victoria Nile. The northern bank has strong savannah game viewing: African elephant (herds are large and frequently seen), Rothschild's giraffe (Uganda's only giraffe species, highly endangered globally), Nile buffalo, Uganda kob, Jackson's hartebeest, oribi, and lion. Leopard are present but less frequently observed than in Queen Elizabeth.
The Budongo Forest, adjacent to the park, is one of Uganda's most important chimpanzee habitats — with over 600 individuals and a research history stretching back decades. Over 450 bird species are recorded in the park.

NILE EXCURSIONS
Boat Trip to the Base of the Falls
The three-hour boat trip from Paraa up the Victoria Nile to the base of Murchison Falls is the centrepiece activity.
The three-hour boat trip from Paraa up the Victoria Nile to the base of Murchison Falls is the centrepiece activity. The Nile is flanked by enormous hippo pods, dense Nile crocodile concentrations, and constant bird activity — African fish eagle, goliath heron, pied kingfisher. The falls are visible from the water and the scale from the river is the defining moment of the journey.
The north bank circuit covers the savannah grassland where most large mammals concentrate. Morning drives are most productive for predators. Giraffe sightings are reliable; the north bank is the best single location in Uganda for them.

Other Activities
Chimpanzee Trekking — Budongo Forest
Budongo Forest Research Station has habituated chimpanzee groups available for trekking. The forest has been a research site since the 1990s. Budongo suits clients who want chimpanzee trekking without building a separate Kibale leg.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Ziwa lies on the main road from Kampala to Murchison Falls, about two hours before the park. It is Uganda's only location for wild white rhino — rhino tracking on foot with armed rangers is the primary activity. Most clients travelling from Kampala include a two-hour stop.
Top of the Falls Hike
A short walk from the north bank road to the top of the falls gives a view looking down into the gorge where the Nile narrows. Takes about 30 minutes return.
12-Month Seasonal Rating
Best Time to Visit
The dry season — December to February and June to September — gives the most reliable game viewing on the north bank. Boat trips operate year-round.
Getting There
Murchison Falls is about 4.5–5 hours by road from Kampala, including the Ziwa Rhino stop. Pakuba airstrip (domestic charter) is inside the park on the north bank. Flying reduces the journey to under two hours from Entebbe. Flying is strongly recommended.
How It Fits Into a Wider Journey
Murchison forms the northern anchor of most Uganda wildlife circuits — typically combined with Budongo Forest for chimps, Ziwa Rhino for rhino tracking, and Kibale Forest or Queen Elizabeth in the south.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Murchison Falls suitable for families?
Yes, with appropriate planning. The boat trip is well-suited to families including younger children. Game drives and rhino tracking at Ziwa are the core activities.
How does Murchison compare to Queen Elizabeth for game viewing?
Murchison has stronger giraffe and elephant viewing, and the boat trip to the falls is the more dramatic water experience. Queen Elizabeth has more species diversity, the Kazinga Channel experience, and the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha. The differences complement rather than overlap.
