Safari vehicle on the Maasai Mara plains in Kenya

How to plan a Kenya safari

Start with the area, season and wildlife priority, then decide how much movement the route can absorb.

Start with the kind of safari you want

The Maasai Mara suits travellers drawn to grassland wildlife and, in the relevant season, the wider migration. Northern Kenya asks a different question: do you want drier country, distinctive northern species and a less conventional route?

Kenya rewards a route with a clear point of view. Trying to cover the Mara, Amboseli, Laikipia, Samburu and the coast in too little time makes the Journey spend more time in transit than in the places that justify the route.

Compare the southern and northern circuits

A southern route can combine Nairobi, Amboseli and the Maasai Mara. Laikipia and Samburu change the landscape and the wildlife priorities, and need a longer plan rather than an extra overnight inserted between other stops.

The coast can follow either route when the flight, transfer and beach priorities justify the change of scene. It should be planned as its own section, not treated as a default ending.

Choose reserve or conservancy with the rules in mind

The main reserve and neighbouring conservancies can differ in access, vehicle density, walking, night activity, camp scale and the structure of the wildlife day. The comparison is about route fit, not a universal ranking.

The right base depends on the season, the activity mix and whether the Journey is primarily focused on river crossings, resident wildlife or a quieter day in the field.

Protect time in the field

Road transfers and domestic flights make different trade-offs. A flight can preserve time in the Mara or the north, while a road journey may make sense when the landscape and overland movement are part of the experience.

Build the route around what the traveller wants to notice, then remove the stops that make that rhythm impossible.
