Elephants crossing open grassland in Kenya

Best time to visit Kenya

Kenya is not defined by one migration window. The best time depends on whether your priority is the Mara, Amboseli, northern Kenya, the coast or a route that combines them.

The Mara is seasonal, but never identical

The wider wildebeest movement is often a reason to travel to the Mara, but its timing and river crossings are not fixed appointments. They depend on rainfall, grazing and the movement of the herds.

A Journey planned around the Mara should have a useful experience even if a hoped-for crossing does not occur. Resident wildlife and the quality of the guide, camp and conservancy context still matter.

Dry and green periods make different offers

Drier months can bring easier wildlife viewing in some areas and more predictable driving conditions. They can also be busier, particularly in the best-known parts of the Mara.

Greener months can feel quieter and more spacious, with changing skies and softer light. They are a considered choice for travellers who accept rain and do not need a particular migration moment.

Northern Kenya follows its own logic

Laikipia and Samburu should not be treated simply as quieter versions of the Mara. Their habitats, species and landscapes give them value in different seasons and for different interests.

Choose the north when its drier country, conservation landscapes and distinctive wildlife are part of the appeal, not only as an alternative when the Mara is busy.

Plan the coast as a separate seasonal choice

A coast extension can work beautifully after safari, but wind, tides and rainfall affect the experience. The preferred beach and the kind of stay you want should guide the decision.

Treat it as part of the Journey rather than a default ending. A shorter, well-timed coast stay is often more satisfying than a longer one added without thought.
