Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where wild rhino can be seen, and the centrepiece of the national effort to return the species to a country where they were poached to extinction in the early 1980s. Spread across some 70 square kilometres of savanna and wetland on the road north to Murchison Falls, it protects a growing population of southern white rhino, each monitored around the clock by dedicated rangers. The sanctuary’s signature experience is rhino tracking on foot — guided, safe and thrilling — which brings you within metres of these enormous animals in the bush, a very different encounter from a game drive. It also offers a canoe trip in search of the shoebill, night nature walks and rich birding, making it both a meaningful conservation visit and a natural stop en route to the north.
