There is no single best month for Tanzania. The useful question is which part of the country you want to visit, what you hope to see and how much weather variation you are comfortable with.
Northern Tanzania, the southern parks, the far west and Zanzibar do not have identical seasonal logic. A date that works well for the Serengeti may not be the most useful choice for Ruaha, Mahale or the coast.
Choose the areas first. Then decide whether wildlife concentration, greener landscapes, fewer vehicles or a particular migration phase matters most.
The migration follows grass and rainfall rather than a calendar. Broad seasonal patterns can guide camp location, but no route should promise a crossing, calving event or herd position on a particular day.
The central Serengeti can be a sensible base when dates are fixed and migration precision is not the only priority. It provides access to resident wildlife while allowing the route to adapt around the wider movement.
Drier periods often make wildlife easier to locate around remaining water and can make road travel more straightforward. They also tend to bring greater demand in well-known areas.
Wetter periods can bring green landscapes, dramatic skies and a quieter feel in some regions. They are best chosen with an honest acceptance of rain, softer roads and more variable conditions.
A Zanzibar stay should be planned around the traveller’s preferred beach character as well as the safari dates. Tidal conditions, wind and rainfall affect different coasts differently.
If the coast is important rather than simply a rest stop, keep enough flexibility to choose it on its own merits rather than forcing it to follow a safari calendar.
