Tsavo National Park

Kenya planning guide

Defining character

Planning Tsavo National Park

Tsavo is Kenya’s greatest wilderness — together, Tsavo East and Tsavo West form the country’s largest protected area, more than 22,000 square kilometres of bush, plains and volcanic hills stretching between Nairobi and the coast. Once the haunt of the man-eating lions of railway legend, Tsavo today is defined by its sheer scale and its dust-red elephants, and by the contrast between its two halves: the open, arid plains of the east, threaded by the Galana River, and the greener, hillier west with its crystal Mzima Springs and rhino sanctuary. Game is wilder and more dispersed than in the famous northern reserves, and visitor numbers are far lower, which is the appeal — vast horizons, big herds and a genuine sense of remoteness, all within easy reach of Kenya’s beaches.
