Laikipia
Kenya planning guide
Planning Laikipia
Laikipia is not a single park but a vast plateau of private conservancies and community ranches north-west of Mount Kenya that together form one of the most important and innovative wildlife landscapes in Africa. With no formal park status and very low visitor numbers, it offers some of the continent’s most exclusive safaris, and it shelters extraordinary numbers of endangered species — the largest population of black rhino in East Africa, more than half of Kenya’s remaining wild dogs, and the rare Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe of the north. Conservancies such as Lewa, Borana and Loisaba pioneered the model of conservation funded by tourism and livestock, and as private land they allow walking, riding, night drives and fly-camping. Laikipia is the choice for travellers who want big wildlife, deep conservation and real seclusion.
