Kilimanjaro — Marangu Route
Discover Kilimanjaro — Marangu Route with Zorani Expeditions.
Journey Overview
The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail on Kilimanjaro. It is the only route with dormitory-style hut accommodation rather than camping — more comfortable and less demanding on gear. The route approaches from the south-east through rainforest, heath and moorland, and alpine desert before the summit push. The standard Marangu schedule is five nights and six days — the minimum to give the body adequate acclimatisation time. The route is not the most scenic on the mountain, but it is the most logistically straightforward.

Itinerary
Moshi / KIA to Marangu Gate — Trek Begins
Transfer from Moshi or Kilimanjaro airport to the Marangu gate (1,830m). Register, meet guide and porter team, and begin the ascent through montane rainforest. Arrive Mandara Hut (2,700m) after approximately three to four hours. Afternoon rest.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the forest and climb into the heath and moorland zone. Giant groundsel and giant lobelia begin to appear. Arrive Horombo Hut (3,720m) after approximately five to six hours. Altitude begins to be felt here — headaches and breathlessness are common and normal. Full afternoon rest.
Horombo Hut — Acclimatisation Day
A rest and acclimatisation day at Horombo — included in all Zorani Marangu schedules. A short walk above the hut promotes acclimatisation. Views of Mawenzi peak from Horombo are clear on a good morning.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The landscape above Horombo becomes alpine desert — rocky and near-barren. The saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi takes approximately five to six hours to cross. Arrive Kibo Hut (4,703m) early afternoon. Rest is critical — summit push begins at midnight. Eat, drink, sleep early.
Summit Night — Uhuru Peak — Descent to Horombo
Midnight start. Ascent from Kibo Hut to Gillman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim takes six to eight hours, then continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue to Horombo. Total walking Day 5: ten to twelve hours.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate — Departure
Final descent through moorland and rainforest to Marangu gate (approximately four hours). Summit certificates issued at the gate. Transfer to Moshi or Kilimanjaro airport.
